As alluded to on the Now page, after my RTA in 2022, the sporting side of my life slowed down. In the early part of my recovery, I walked in to Leigh Hackspace, which was in it’s early days of coming out of Covid lock down.

A Hackspace is peculiar place. Each one has it’s own identity, but principally a Hackspace or Makerspace is a place where people come together and share making tools and skills.

Ours has a nice balance of technology and arts, with 3d printers, laser, CNC as well as traditional woodworking, textiles and a darkroom. We host artists, including the local parade group. This dynamic makes for an eclectic group, and for some interesting builds, where you can be building stage props for a #1 UK band one week, and helping to build a bubble blowing caterpillar bike the next.

Leigh Hackspace is located in Spinners Mill, a Grade 2 listed building outside the centre of Leigh. Spinners is home to a collection of boutique businesses and artists spread over five floors - we’ve got our own cinema on the fourth floor.

The mill, and the Hackspace, are constantly evolving over time. We’ve just finished two large builds, rebuilding our social area and building new pods in our workshops space. The social area is now dual use, and can be used for large builds by clearing the central space, and the new pods in workshop area allow us to now set up a metalworking space, and add more private space.

If you’re in the Leigh, Wigan, Bolton or Manchester areas, please feel free to drop in and see us. We run tours on Saturday from 12PM til 1PM. If you’re looking for a space to run a local user group meeting, or have a project you would like to run, please feel free to get in touch.

It’s also why things have been a little bit quiet here and on Twitch. I’m at the space several times a week, and that takes a fair amount of energy. I do continue to post over on Mastodon, and my goal to 2026 is to post a little more frequently here.
